Unfettered Shrug

hesje4This post is about crochet and stars. The stars or hexagon grannies are put together to form the unfettered shrug. (I still don’t know exactly what the meaning of the pattern title is in dutch). The shrug was first published in a magazine this spring.

The stars  have to be made first. I am making them from a thick cotton yarn (durable double four) in the color petrol and hook 5.0 mm.  The hook is one of my cheapest hookies. but it is a very smooth hook and that is what I need with this yarn.

The pattern of the stars is not very difficult but you have to be concentrated to make one of them, for there are many changes in the pattern. Luckily there is a chart which can be followed. I have simplified the pattern a bit, because the yarn made the original stars very stiff. In the central flower petals I decreased 1 dc in each petal and  in the third round I make 5 sc in stead of 7 sc in each loop. The half stars are made almost the same, with the same decreases and there I decreased also some chain stitches. 10 instead of 11.

The stars and the half-stars are assembled to form 2 panels. The panels will form a small kimono that can be weared over a t-shirt or blouse.

hesjeIn each panel there are 8 stars and 8 half-stars. The stars are 16 cm when ready. I misread the instructions about joining the stars. I have now tried several methods of joining, but sewing is still the most beautifully method. I have done almost one panel.

I am not yet finished with this project. A lot has to be done, but I will write about it in another post and show the kimono when ready.
